Elaine Cromie is a visual journalist and documentary photographer based in Detroit, Michigan.
She is a founding member of the journalist collective Transborder Media and is producing her first documentary about deported U.S. veterans. Elaine has been photographing and documenting daily life around the U.S.-Mexico and U.S. - Canada borders for the past several years. Her research focuses on government policies that affect immigrants and refugees and recently the effects of U.S. military bases and the negative impact it has on women.
She worked in Detroit as a photographer with MLive Media Group from July 2014 to July 2015 and the Detroit Free Press from 2016 - 2017. She was part of the 2013 New York Times Student Journalism Institute. Elaine and her colleague were awarded second place at the Gender and Justice competition held by the Supreme Court of Mexico, United Nations Women, United Nations Human Rights of Mexico and several other organizations in November 2014 for their work on deported U.S. veterans.
Her work has appeared in publications such as the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Vox, NBC, VICE, and others. Elaine is available for assignments in the U.S., Mexico and around the world.
